Firearms that Are “Generally Prohibited” under California Law
While some modifications to legal firearms can render them illegal, certain firearms are considered “generally prohibited” under state law.
Generally prohibited firearms in California include:
- Large-capacity magazines (more than 10 rounds)
- Short-barreled shotguns and rifles
- Guns not immediately recognizable as firearms
- Camouflaging firearm containers
- Undetectable firearms
- Multi-burst trigger activators
- Zip guns
- Wallet guns
- Unconventional pistols
- Certain firearm modifications
Additionally, recent legislation has attempted to ban certain “assault weapons” (as defined by the state), including semi-automatic, centerfire rifles and semi-automatic, non-fixed magazine pistols with certain features. However, if you owned one of these types of firearms prior to the law, you are allowed to keep it as long as you registered it with the California Department of Justice (DOJ) by June 30, 2018.
