Learn More about Keeping a Firearm on Your Person

Having a gun at the ready can be a huge benefit when you are in danger. However, there are laws and requirements you must first meet before you can legally carry a firearm in public. In California, you must first obtain a Carrying a Concealed Weapon (CCW) permit. For most people, this means undergoing some firearms training and proving you are not a potentially dangerous person. For others, however, this can mean working to appeal a criminal record and changing their eligibility status. At the Law Offices of Virginia L. Landry, the Gun Queen may be able to help you make the right changes and obtain a CCW permit.

Requirements for a CCW Permit

In California’s Penal Code 26150 and 26155, you can find the basic requirements for obtaining a concealed weapons license. However, the basic tenets are simple. You must not pose a threat by being allowed to carry a dangerous weapon with you.

The law states you must:

  • Be of good moral character
  • Have good cause for wanting a concealed weapons license
  • Live in the city in which you are applying for the license
  • Complete required training

Getting the Right Training

As you will now have access to a deadly weapon whenever you carry one on your person, it is extremely important that you get the training you need to operate it responsibly. The majority of gun accidents occur because people simply don’t understand how powerful guns are, no matter where they are used.

According to California Penal Code 26165, your concealed weapons training must consist of:

  • At least 8 hours of training, but no more than 16
  • Firearm safety
  • Firearm handling
  • Shooting technique
  • Gun laws
  • A live-fire shooting test to demonstrate proficiency
  • The trainer’s/training facility’s testing standards made public
