Lawful Gun Ownership
Because guns are deadly weapons, it is important that they are kept on a close leash. By being forthright about your firearm collection, you can avoid losing your weapon, or worse, being implicated in someone else’s gun crime. You can find laws about legal firearms here at the State Attorney General’s Office website.
The basics are that your weapon must:
- Show a visible serial number
- Not be automatic or an assault weapon (AK models, AR-15 models, Uzi, etc.)
- Be sold with a safety device (cable lock) or be stored in a gun safe
- Come with an approved Dealer’s Record of Sale (DROS) form
- Not be sold to a prohibited person
You must purchase a firearm from an approved dealer. For the most part, you cannot sell a gun to someone without being a licensed firearms dealer. There is a total of $25 in fees that must be paid at that time as well. Finally, you must submit a DROS application and have it approved.
