Women and Guns

The Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution guarantees the right to keep and bear arms to all citizens. This right allows us to protect ourselves and those we love. For women in particular, owning a gun is a good way to ensure she is well-equipped to defend herself against home intruders or attackers.

Women Gun Ownership Statistics

According to the Pew Research Center, about 62% of gun owners in the United States are male, and 22% of women report that they own a gun. Women gun owners differ from male gun owners in the following ways:

  1. Women tend to become gun owners at a later age than men.

  1. Women are more likely than men to cite self-defense as the only reason they own a gun.

  1. Women who own guns are less likely than their male counterparts to say they go sport shooting or hunting.

  1. Male gun owners are more likely to report that there is a gun both loaded and easily accessible to them all of the time when they’re home.

Men and women gun owners are most similar in their view that the right to own guns is essential to their personal sense of freedom (70% of women and 77% of men).

Using Guns for Self-Defense

27% of women gun owners say that self-defense was their only reason for buying a gun. While we all hope there will never be an occasion when we have to act in self-defense, it does happen, and having a firearm to protect yourself is one of the surest ways to stop a perpetrator from harming you. California offers permits for Carrying Concealed Weapons (CCW) to help you stay prepared no matter where you are.

Any good gun owner knows how to handle their weapon properly and safely. Trainings available to gun owners include:

  • Concealed handguns

  • Home defense shotguns

  • Gun safety
